Description
Tufts University School of Dental Medicine is seeking a dynamic and forward-thinking Director of Digital Dentistry to lead the integration, implementation, and management of digital dental technologies across all clinical and educational platforms. The Director will oversee the development and continuous improvement of digital workflows, manage state-of-the-art digital equipment, and play a key role in shaping curriculum and training programs to ensure students and faculty stay ahead in this rapidly evolving field. Additionally, the Director will be responsible for ensuring that all digital initiatives are aligned with the school's strategic goals and contribute to a sustainable financial model. The Director will also collaborate closely with Materials Management and Clinical Operations to ensure digital dentistry initiatives are supported by appropriate infrastructure, staffing, and procurement processes.
Key Responsibilities:
- Digital Workflow Oversight:
- Lead the development, implementation, and continuous optimization of digital workflows within the clinical, laboratory, and educational environments. Ensure seamless integration of digital tools and systems to enhance patient care and clinical outcomes, while maintaining high standards of accuracy, efficiency, and safety. These workflows must be driven by educational pedagogy (what students/residents need to be exposed to and competent/proficient at). The Director will also ensure standardization of digital workflows across departments, minimizing redundancies and supporting school-wide consistency.
- Equipment and Technology Management:
- Oversee the procurement, installation, and maintenance of all digital dental equipment, including CAD/CAM systems, 3D imaging, digital radiography, and intraoral scanners. Ensure all technologies are up-to-date, functional, and used efficiently by faculty, staff, and students. The Director will establish equipment governance protocols in collaboration with IT, Materials Management, and Clinical Administration to ensure accountability and sustainability.
- Curriculum Development & Integration:
- Work closely with faculty to incorporate digital dentistry principles into the school’s curriculum. Develop and deliver training programs for both students and faculty, ensuring they are equipped with the necessary skills to excel in the digital era of dentistry. Provide ongoing education and support for faculty members integrating new technologies into their teaching. The Director will work with course directors and program directors to align digital training milestones with competency requirements and licensure exam expectations.
- Budget & Resource Management:
- Develop and manage a sustainable budget for digital dentistry initiatives, balancing cost-effective solutions with cutting-edge technologies. Oversee the allocation of resources, ensuring the department can meet both short-term needs and long-term goals. The Director will provide annual financial and resource utilization reports to the Dean’s Office.
- Research & Innovation:
- Stay at the forefront of emerging trends in digital dentistry. Lead and encourage faculty and student engagement in research initiatives focused on improving digital dental technologies, patient care, and educational outcomes. Collaborate with external organizations, industry leaders, and academic institutions to promote innovation and research opportunities. The Director will also actively pursue external funding and grants to support research and innovation in digital dentistry.
- Collaboration & Stakeholder Engagement:
- Foster a culture of collaboration between the digital dentistry team, clinical departments, research teams, and administration. Serve as the primary point of contact for internal and external stakeholders related to digital dental initiatives. This includes collaborating with external vendors and institutional partners to ensure interoperability of platforms and long-term vendor accountability.
- Data-Driven Decision Making:
- Use data analytics and digital metrics to assess the effectiveness of digital workflows, equipment, and curriculum. Provide regular reports to school leadership, ensuring transparency in performance outcomes and identifying areas for improvement. The Director will develop clear metrics to measure faculty adoption, student competency, and return on investment for digital technologies.
- Sustainability & Long-Term Planning:
- Contribute to the long-term vision of the Tufts University School of Dental Medicine by ensuring that digital dentistry programs are sustainable, cost-effective, and adaptable to future advancements in technology.
- Resource Management:
- Manage physical plant needs/staff needs to provide more efficient/centralized service. The Director will also evaluate staffing models and propose recommendations for technical support and digital lab operations.
Qualifications
Preferred Qualifications:
- Preferred Doctoral degree in dentistry (DMD/DDS) or related field. Candidates rooted in dental technology with strong laboratory management and digital workflows are encouraged to apply.
- Experience (5+ years) in digital dentistry, including both clinical practice and educational roles.
- Proven expertise in the implementation and management of digital technologies in dentistry, including experience with CAD/CAM, 3D imaging, and other digital dental systems.
- Strong leadership and organizational skills, with the ability to collaborate across diverse teams and departments.
- Experience in curriculum development, particularly in the context of digital dentistry education.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to engage, train, and motivate students, faculty, and staff.
- Demonstrated experience with budgeting, resource allocation, and strategic planning.
- A passion for innovation and staying up-to-date with the latest trends in digital dentistry.
