Virginia Commonwealth University, School of Dentistry is seeking a full-time faculty member in the Department of Oral Diagnostic Sciences. Rank and tenure eligibility commensurate with candidate qualifications and experience.
The faculty member will have primary responsibility for course development, directorship, and teaching in the area of oral medicine and biomedical sciences for dental, dental hygiene, and advanced education students in collaboration with School of Dentistry and School of Medicine faculty members. Focus will be on curricula offerings spanning the entire course of study to support integrated biomedical and clinical sciences learning. Teaching across traditional department lines and in multidisciplinary teams is vital. Faculty members are expected to foster transformative learning that is informed by interdisciplinary and translational research, scholarship, and creative expression. Clinical and didactic teaching are essential. Ongoing professional development in teaching and learning is expected. Scholarly activity resulting in peer-reviewed publications is expected with opportunities for collaboration with all Departments in the School of Dentistry and with the Philips Institute for Oral Health Research (www.philipsinstitute.vcu.edu
). A practice in oral medicine to include direct clinical patient care is required. The clinic includes close collaboration with an orofacial pain specialist and an oral pathologist.
For appointment at the rank of assistant professor, the candidate will be required to have an established research agenda and a clear potential for external funding, and potential for scholarship or creative expression to complement and expand existing expertise in the department. For appointment at the rank of associate professor, the candidate will also be required to have a well-developed scholarly/research portfolio with evidence of multi-disciplinary applications.
Applicants must have a D.D.S. or D.M.D. degree, be eligible for licensure in Virginia, and completed a CODA accredited advance education in Oral Medicine. Applicants must be a diplomate of or board eligible for the American Board of Oral Medicine. Although oral medicine training is preferred, applicants who completed a CODA accredited oral and maxillofacial pathology advanced education program and who have a strong and extensive experience in oral medicine will be considered. Teaching and practice experience are preferred. Demonstrated ability to adapt to change and embrace modern technology, to work in and foster a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU; to contribute to and participate in a humanistic environment of learning and to incorporate adult learning theory, evidence-based oral health care, innovation in student learning, and critical thinking.
