Innovative and Collegial Environments Attract and Retain the Best Faculty.

The Ohio State University College of Dentistry invites applications for a full-time position as Chair of the Division of Dental Hygiene at the rank of associate professor with tenure or professor with tenure. These appointments require candidates to demonstrate a record of research, scholarly works, and teaching excellence.

This position will lead a division structured on the principles of patient care through a comprehensive, vertically-integrated small group practice, and interdisciplinary model of care delivery. Responsibilities include: administration; strategic curriculum planning; resource management; classroom, clinical, and online instruction as appropriate; development of junior faculty; supporting and refining an integrated approach to educating dental hygiene and dental students; and maintaining a record of scholarly activity. The position also provides an opportunity to participate in the college’s intramural faculty practice.

The division is comprised of a balance of tenure track, clinical track, and adjunct faculty, and staff all of whom are committed to a comprehensive care model of education for dental hygiene students. Programs offered include an entry-level baccalaureate degree, an online degree completion baccalaureate, and an online Master of Science degree in dental hygiene. Entry-level students gain clinical experience both in the university-based clinic and the college’s network of community-based clinics. The division’s research strengths include evaluation of teaching methodologies and the utility of social media in health science education, as well as the assessment of different forms of dental hygiene instrumentation. Numerous opportunities exist to collaborate with divisions in the college and with units/colleges across Ohio State’s campus.

The Ohio State University College of Dentistry is the fourth largest public dental school in the country, and it is the only state-supported dental school in Ohio. The Columbus campus is located in the nation’s 15th largest city, which is recognized as an emerging hub for high-tech companies and a center for education, health care, and the arts.
The college is divided into ten divisions or academic units. The Division of Dental Hygiene is the only dental college-based hygiene program in the state. To ensure a full appreciation for each discipline’s contributions to patient-centered care, the division’s faculty work in close partnership with other college faculty members who have broad experience in the discipline of dental hygiene. In collaboration with dental faculty members and pre-doctoral students, the division’s dental hygiene students may gain Expanded Function Dental Auxiliary (EFDA) experiences that make them eligible to sit for the credentialing examination.
The college is in the process of planning a new facility that will include state-of-the-art pre-doctoral labs and clinical facilities equipped with the latest in digital technologies. Top priorities for the new facility will include innovative learning space; computer-based simulation environments; patient-centered care facilities; and small group practice clinics in which dental and dental hygiene students will care for patients in an interdisciplinary environment supported by a team of general and specialty dental and dental hygiene faculty.
The successful candidate should have the following attributes: excellent interpersonal and communication skills; and a desire to create an environment that promotes collegiality and collaboration among members of various education, research, and service communities. A willingness to serve as a role model and advocate for the ideals of professionalism and high ethical standards in a health science educational setting is essential.

Qualified candidates must have graduated from a dental hygiene program accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation; a graduate degree in dental hygiene or a related field; and a minimum of five years of combined administrative and teaching experience. Preference may be given to candidates who have a PhD, EdD, or equivalent doctoral degree. Eligibility for a regular or limited teaching license in the State of Ohio is also required. Information on state dental licensure is available at www.dental.ohio.gov/licensinginfo.stm.
